Getting Help
I don't live in Woodbury. Can I still get help?
Our programs are here first and foremost for residents of Woodbury. If you live outside of Woodbury and need food assistance, our Food Bank may still be able to offer limited support through federal TEFAP food distribution, and we’re happy to help point you toward resources closer to home if that’s a better fit.
Do I need an appointment, or can I just come to the Food Bank?
We ask that anyone visiting the Food Bank for the first time call our Executive Director ahead of time at 203-263-3869. It only takes a few minutes, and it means we can walk you through what to expect so your visit feels calm and easy rather than confusing. After that first call, we’ll let you know what to expect for future visits.
Is this confidential? Will anyone find out I asked for help?
Yes, your privacy matters to us. Whatever you share with us when asking for help is kept confidential. Reaching out to CSCW is nothing to feel uneasy about — it’s simply neighbors helping neighbors.
I've never had to ask for help before. Is that okay?
More than okay. Many of the people we help never expected to need us either. A job loss, an unexpected bill, or a hard season can happen to anyone, and asking for a hand isn’t something to feel ashamed of. We’ll treat you with the same respect and warmth we’d want for our own family.
Do you check my income or assets before helping?
For our Financial Crisis Assistance program, we don’t look at your assets the way some larger programs do. We’re focused on understanding what you’re facing right now and how we can help you find stability, not on running you through a long qualification process.
How often can I receive assistance?
It depends on your situation, and it’s best discussed directly with our Executive Directors. Our goal is always to help create real stability, not to be a one-time stopgap or an ongoing dependency, so we look at each request individually.
The Woodbury Food Bank
What are the Food Bank's hours, and where is it located?
The Woodbury Food Bank is open for shopping on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We’re located at 238 Main Street, Woodbury, CT 06798, tucked behind LaBonne’s Market and directly under the Newtown Savings Bank branch. Take the driveway alongside the plaza building, and it will lead you right to us.
Donations are always accepted online. If you would like to do an in-person donation, our hours are: Wednesday & Thursday from 8:30am-11:00am and our Friday & Saturday hours.
Can I get pet food too?
Yes. Through our partnership with Davis Companion Animal Hospital, Kaz’s Pantry, and Natural Pet Market, we’re able to offer pet food to families who need it, so feeding your pet doesn’t have to compete with feeding your family.
How many families does the Food Bank serve?
On average, we provide food assistance to more than 90 households in Woodbury every single week, made possible entirely through the generosity of our community.
Financial Crisis Assistance
What kind of financial help does CSCW offer?
We offer supplemental fuel, energy, and crisis assistance. We’re meant to be a supplemental resource alongside other assistance, not a sole source of ongoing support.
Should I contact the Town or CSCW first for fuel and energy assistance?
Start with the Town of Woodbury’s Director of Social Services at 203-263-4117 to check your eligibility for state and federal energy programs. From there, our supplemental fuel and energy assistance can help fill in the gaps.
Is CSCW the same as the Town's social services office?
No. We work alongside the Town, but we’re an independent nonprofit and don’t operate the same way a government office does. We don’t look at things like assets the way the Town might, and our approach is built around getting to know your specific situation.
Giving, Volunteering & Support
Does CSCW receive funding from the Town of Woodbury?
No. We receive no funding from the town and are supported entirely by the generosity of our neighbors, local organizations, and supporters. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a direct difference.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. The Community Services Council of Woodbury is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so your donation is tax-deductible. You can find our EIN and public financial filings on our Transparency & Trust page.
I don't have money to give right now. How else can I help?
There are plenty of meaningful ways to support CSCW beyond a financial gift, including:
- Volunteering your time at the Food Bank
- Organizing or contributing to a local food drive
- Shopping our Amazon Wish List and having items sent directly to us
- Spreading the word to neighbors, businesses, or community groups
I own a local business. How can I get involved?
There are lots of ways local businesses can make a difference: hosting a round-up campaign at checkout, running a food drive, adopting a shelf at the Food Bank, hosting a fundraiser or a dining night out with proceeds benefiting CSCW, or sponsoring families through the Giving Tree.
We’d love to talk with you about our Community Vendor Support Registry, a directory connecting Woodbury residents with trusted local businesses that offer things like senior discounts or emergency support. It’s a wonderful way to support the community while gaining visibility with local neighbors. Please visit our Ways to Give, Volunteer & Support page for more details, or give us a call.
